Red Light Therapy & Its Connection to Energy Healing
Through my journey becoming a holistic health practitioner and learning about the many alternative and complementary modalities available today, I was introduced to Red Light and Infrared Therapy.
What is Red Light Therapy?
Red Light Therapy (RLT) has become increasingly popular in the wellness community, and for good reason. It offers a variety of remarkable health benefits, supported by studies demonstrating its effectiveness in addressing specific health issues and enhancing overall well-being. Many practitioners have incorporated red light therapy into their holistic health services due to the significant advantages observed and reported. More recently, access to this therapy has even expanded beyond practitioners; numerous devices designed for home use are now available, allowing everyone to experience the healing properties of red light.
RLT, also referred to as ‘photo-biomodulation,’ is a technique utilized for treating specific health conditions, reducing inflammation, and enhancing healing. It involves the application of low-wavelength red light to stimulate various healing responses. The process consists of repetitively exposing your skin to low levels of red and near-infrared light (NIR) for a designated duration. At these low wavelengths, red light does not produce heat or emit harmful UV rays; instead, it penetrates deeply into the skin layers to promote healing.
Low-wavelength red light supports mitochondria, often dubbed the “powerhouse of the cell.” Mitochondria play a crucial role in generating energy within cells and are integral to a process called ‘apoptosis,’ which is the natural elimination of unhealthy cells from the body. This ongoing process is vital for maintaining our overall health. Mitochondria determine which cells should be discarded and which can remain. Their functionality is closely linked to our health status; if mitochondria are underperforming, our bodies struggle to produce energy or remove harmful cells, leading to health complications. By enhancing mitochondrial energy, cells can operate more efficiently and undergo more rejuvenation and repair.
In essence, the mitochondria convert the food we consume into energy for cellular use. Nearly every cell in our body, excluding red blood cells, contains mitochondria. However, various aspects of modern living can damage our mitochondria, impairing their functions and reducing energy availability for cells. When cells lack energy, their performance declines. A fitting analogy is a flashlight with a weak battery; it emits a dim light and fails to function optimally. Think of red light therapy as a charger for your cells. Red and infrared light penetrate deeply into the skin, enabling access to the mitochondria found in our cells, and therefore, skin, muscles, organs, and joints. This is how a red light device achieves healing effects within our bodies.
Over recent years, RLT has gained popularity and has become the subject of extensive scientific research. A simple search on PubMed for ‘red light therapy’ reveals thousands of experimental studies published on the topic. These studies cover a wide range of subjects and examine numerous health conditions where red light therapy has been tested for support. Many findings are compelling, showcasing high rates of statistical significance, while others indicate enough potential for further investigation. Overall, it is clear that red light therapy is a well-researched supportive treatment that can be applied to various acute and chronic health issues.
The amazing possibilities of harnessing light and its energy
The scientific understanding of light is vast and continually evolving, revealing fascinating insights into its nature and potential applications. Light is not only a fundamental element of our universe but also a versatile tool in various fields of science and medicine. It behaves both as a wave and a particle, a duality that allows it to exhibit a wide range of properties and interactions.
In the realm of health and wellness, light's ability to penetrate the skin and influence biological processes has opened up innovative treatments like RLT in various forms, laser therapy, infrared saunas and more. These therapies leverage specific applications and wavelengths to stimulate cellular activity to promote healing.
Some of the many proven or reported benefits to these light therapies are; boosting the immune system, circulation and detoxification, reducing inflammation, pain relief, accelerated wound healing, scar and wrinkle reducing, anti-aging, enhancing sleep, mood, energy and cognitive performance, plus generally helping to support and balance all of the body’s systemic processes. The therapeutic use of light is grounded in rigorous research, exploring how different frequencies and intensities can target specific health concerns, from skin conditions to pain management and much, much more.
Also, knowing the profound impact that light can have on our biological rhythms and emotional states, we can create environments and routines that align with our natural cycles, promoting balance in our lives. Understanding the psychological impacts of light has led to developments in lighting design that can enhance mood, productivity, and overall mental well-being. From creating dynamic workspaces that mimic natural daylight to designing therapeutic environments that support mental health, the applications of light in daily life are vast and transformative.
Beyond individual health benefits, light plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable practices. Solar energy, a clean and renewable resource, is harnessed through photovoltaic cells to power homes, businesses, and communities, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and helping to combat climate change. In technology, advancements in light-based communication and energy solutions are paving the way for more efficient and sustainable practices. Fiber optic technology, for instance, uses light to transmit data at incredible speeds, revolutionizing the way we connect and communicate.
Light vs Energy?
While light and energy are deeply intertwined, they each play unique roles in our understanding of the universe and in the practices that harness their potential. At its essence, energy represents the capacity to perform work or initiate change, manifesting in various forms such as mechanical, thermal, chemical, and electrical. Light, however, is a tangible expression of energy, specifically a form of electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye.
Light carries energy and travels in waves, which vary in wavelength and frequency. This variation is what gives rise to the electromagnetic spectrum, a range that includes not only visible light but also invisible forms like ultraviolet, infrared, X-rays, and radio waves. Each segment of this spectrum has unique properties and interacts differently with matter, offering a myriad of applications in science, technology, and health.
In the realm of holistic health, understanding the relationship between energy and light can open up new avenues for healing and personal growth. Practices such as light therapy and energy healing both tap into these fundamental forces to promote balance and well-being.
Energy therapy is a holistic practice that taps into the body's natural energy fields to promote healing and balance. Techniques such as Reiki and acupuncture are commonly used to facilitate this flow and restore equilibrium within the body's energy systems. Practitioners often work with the chakras (energy centers), to identify areas of imbalance and gently guide the energy to flow more freely. This approach not only fosters physical healing but also encourages emotional and spiritual clarity. By addressing blockages and facilitating energy movement, individuals often experience a sense of renewed vitality and inner peace. Many report feeling more grounded and centered, with an increased awareness of their own energy patterns and how they interact with the world around them
In Reiki specifically, practitioners channel universal life energy to help clear blockages, restore balance and heal the body's energy centers and fields. Reiki sessions are often accompanied by a sense of warmth and light, as the energy moves and flows. It is also common for some clients and/or practitioners to see colors in their mind during a session, which can be indicative of the specific chakras (energy center) being activated or balanced. These colors often align with the chakra’s color, reflecting the areas that are undergoing the healing or treatment. For instance, seeing green might suggest work being done on the heart chakra, while blue could relate to treating the throat chakra.
A very brief description of the Chakra
system is;
Originating from ancient Indian traditions, the chakra system consists of seven primary energy centers aligned along the spine. Each chakra/energy center has its own energy wavelength and therefore is associated with a specific color. Each one governs a different area of the body, as well as organs, glands, emotions and qualities.

The experience of seeing colors during a Reiki session can not only enrich the healing process but can also provide insights into one's emotional and spiritual state. It can also serve as a gentle reminder of the interconnectedness of our physical and energetic bodies, helping individuals to become more attuned to their inner landscapes.
Healing light and energy in our natural world.
The natural world provides numerous instances where light and energy contribute to our wellbeing, healing and rejuvenation.
One of the most mystical and beautiful natural phenomenon, a rainbow, is a perfect example of the interplay between light and the different energies of our world. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, rainbows also illustrate fundamental principles of optics and physics, offering a tangible demonstration of how light behaves under different conditions. A rainbow occurs when sunlight is refracted, dispersed, and reflected in water droplets, creating a spectrum of light in the sky. This spectrum displays a range of colors - typically red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
Not surprisingly, a rainbow and its spectrum of light corresponds directly with the chakra energy centers mentioned above, each color of the rainbow aligning with a specific chakra. This beautiful correlation between the colors of the rainbow and the chakra system illustrates just how interconnected our physical world is with our energetic and spiritual selves.
Another well-known example is the process of photosynthesis in plants. Through the absorption of sunlight, plants convert light energy into chemical energy, producing oxygen and glucose, essential components for sustaining life on Earth. This remarkable process not only supports plant growth but also maintains the balance of oxygen in our atmosphere, which is crucial for the survival of all living organisms.
In the animal kingdom (including the human race), exposure to natural sunlight plays a vital role in the production of vitamin D. This essential vitamin, synthesized when the skin is exposed to UVB rays, is crucial for maintaining strong bones and a healthy immune system. The “sunshine” vitamin also has mood-enhancing properties, often linked to the reduction of seasonal depression and the promotion of overall well-being.
Moreover, this natural light also influences our circadian rhythms, the internal clocks that regulate our sleep-wake cycles. Proper exposure to sunlight helps align these rhythms, leading to better sleep quality, improved mood, and enhanced cognitive function. This natural synchronization of body and environment showcases the profound impact of light on our physical and mental health.
Last but not least, the gentle energy emitted by the Earth's magnetic fields can have calming and restorative effects on our well-being. Spending time in nature allows us to connect with these energies, helping us feel grounded and rejuvenated. This connection with the Earth's natural rhythms can reduce stress, enhance mood, and promote overall health. The practice of "earthing" or "grounding" involves direct physical contact with the Earth's surface, such as walking barefoot on grass or sand. This simple act has been shown to help balance our body's electrical charge and has been associated with numerous health benefits, including improved sleep, reduced inflammation, and increased vitality.
Many people find solace and rejuvenation in nature, where the energy of the earth and the warm light of the sun combine to create a healing environment. The natural synergy of light and energy in our world serves as a testament to their integral role in nurturing life and promoting health, reminding us of the interconnectedness of all living things.
