10 Good Signs of a Spiritual Awakening ...and 5 Not-So-Good Ones

A spiritual awakening is a profound shift in consciousness that can occur suddenly or gradually. It is a process of becoming more aware of the deeper meaning of life, connecting with your inner self, and experiencing a sense of unity with the world and universe.

If you are experiencing a spiritual awakening, it may just be because you are ready to explore a higher level of awareness and understanding. This can be triggered by various life events, such as a major life change, a period of intense introspection, a deep sense of longing for something more meaningful, or maybe even a sudden sense of purpose or a feeling of inner peace that transcends understanding why.

It can often be sparked by a challenging experience, such as loss or adversity, that forces one to reassess their beliefs and priorities or sometimes, just encountering a new perspective or learning about other spiritual beliefs and practices can be what ignites the spark of a spiritual awakening. (This was my case, from taking Yoga Instructor Training and learning the inspiring traditional philosophies.)

"A spiritual awakening is a wonderful gift that will lead you to personal growth and discovery, increased passion and compassion for life, and a greater sense of your direction and purpose."

Above, are all positive changes, growth and side-effects of a spiritual awakening however, it's important to be mindful of certain signs and emotions that indicate you may be facing some more challenging ones along the way.

There may be feelings of confusion and disorientation that arise and this is simply because you are suddenly questioning beliefs and perceptions that were once deeply held. Some of us may find it challenging to explain this experience and the changes that are happening within ourselves to others as we feel they may not understand or accept us. It’s also possible to have moments where you feel a sense of loss for your more simple understanding of the world, yourself and your life, and wish that you could go back.

These are all very normal feelings to have, just make sure you are aware of these signs and take the proper steps to care for yourself as you navigate some of the more challenging experiences you may go through.

Some not-so-great signs/symptoms to look out for during your spiritual journey include;

1. Detachment from Old Relationships: As you grow spiritually, you may find that some of your old relationships no longer resonate with you. This can make you feel like you are being judgmental or unkind but you need to understand that this shift in relationships is a natural part of personal growth and spiritual development. It's important to remember that this is not a reflection of insincerity or indifference on your part, but rather a sign of your evolving journey. Surround yourself with those who uplift and align with your spiritual growth, while also honoring the relationships that continue to inspire love and joy and support your journey.

2. Feeling Overwhelmed: Spiritual awakenings can bring a flood of new emotions, insights, and awareness, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. You are experiencing a profound shift in consciousness and understanding so just remember to be gentle with yourself and allow time and space for yourself to process and integrate these new feelings and perceptions at your own pace. Seeking support from trusted friends, mentors, or spiritual guides can also be incredibly helpful in navigating through this period of intense growth and transformation.
3. Uncertainty and Confusion: As you question your beliefs and reassess your values, you may experience periods of uncertainty and confusion. During these times of questioning and reflection, it is important to remember that uncertainty is a natural part of growth and self-discovery ...and life! Embrace this opportunity to explore different perspectives and consider new ideas. Allow yourself the space to navigate through any confusion with curiosity and an open mind. Remember, it is through these moments of uncertainty that we often find clarity and deeper understanding.
4. Physical and Emotional Symptoms: Some people experience physical symptoms like fatigue, headaches and body pain during a spiritual awakening. These symptoms can be a result of the body adjusting to higher levels of spiritual energy and consciousness and also in response to all of your heightened emotions draining you physically. Diet, selfcare, and physical movement are going to be very important to keep your body running smoothly.
5. Feeling Isolated: Going through a spiritual awakening can sometimes make you feel isolated from others who may not understand or share your experiences. It's important to remember that feeling isolated during a spiritual awakening is a common experience shared by many on this journey. While it may seem challenging at times, this period of introspection and growth can lead to a deeper connection with yourself and a greater understanding of the world around you. When you are ready, find and reach out to like-minded individuals through local spiritual businesses, groups, trainings and workshops or even online communities to create positive social connections.

Remember, while these signs and symptoms may not feel great in the moment, they are often signals of real growth and transformation on your spiritual journey. Accept and embrace them with self compassion and seek out helpful resources (LIKE THIS ONE!) to help you.

Some excellent practices to cope with all of the changes and symptoms of a spiritual awakening;

2. Nature Connection: Spend time in nature to ground yourself and feel the interconnectedness of all living beings. Nature has a beautiful way of soothing the soul and sparking spiritual insights.
